Why HOA rules matter

Most HOAs have guidelines for fences. They often cover height, material, board style, stain color, which side faces out, and how far forward the fence can sit. Rules differ from one community to the next, so always read your own HOA's guidelines.

Many HOAs also require you to submit a request and get approval before any fence goes in. Installing first and asking later can mean changing or removing a fence you already paid for.

Common HOA requirements

These are examples of rules homeowners often run into. They are general examples, not the rules for your neighborhood.

• A maximum height for backyard fences
• No fencing forward of the front of the house
• Wood privacy fences in a set style, such as board-on-board
• A required stain color, or a requirement to leave wood natural
• The finished side of the fence facing outward

Before you request a quote

• Get your HOA's fence guidelines. They are usually on the HOA portal or available from the management company.
• Find your plat or survey. It is usually in your closing documents and shows property lines and easements.
• Check for easements and utilities. Lines must be marked before digging. In Texas this is done through 811, and many installers handle the request.
• Check city permits. Requirements can change, so check with the City of Hutto or ask the installer.
• Ask your builder. If your home is brand new, the builder may have rules about timing, or may have already installed part of a fence.

• Your neighborhood or HOA name
• Any fence rules you already have, such as height, style or stain
• Whether you are still waiting on HOA approval
• Your move-in or closing date, if the home is new
• The rough length of fence and number of gates
